Trust is the most valuable thing a news organisation has. Everyone who reports, writes, edits or produces content for GhanaNews24 is expected to follow these principles.

Independence

Our journalism is not for sale. Coverage is decided by our editors on news value alone — never by advertisers, sponsors, owners’ business interests, politicians or any other outside party. Nobody outside the newsroom approves a story before publication.

Conflicts of interest

  • Journalists do not cover people, companies or organisations in which they or their close family have a financial, personal or political interest. Potential conflicts must be disclosed to an editor, who may reassign the story.
  • Staff do not hold office in a political party or campaign, and do not do paid work for organisations they cover.
  • Journalists may not use information gathered for a story for personal financial gain, including trading in shares of companies they report on.

Gifts, payments and travel

We do not accept money, gifts, favours or hospitality that could influence — or appear to influence — our coverage. Items of token value may be accepted only where refusing would be impolite, and must be declared. We do not accept payment, “transport money” or any other inducement in exchange for coverage. If a trip or event is paid for by a third party, we disclose that in the story.

Honesty in newsgathering

Our journalists identify themselves as reporters when gathering news. Undercover methods or hidden recording are used only when there is a strong public interest, the information cannot be obtained any other way, and a senior editor has approved it. We never plagiarise; work by others is attributed.

Privacy

We respect people’s private lives and intrude only when there is a clear public interest, such as exposing crime, corruption, serious wrongdoing or protecting public health and safety. We are especially careful with children and with people who are grieving, ill or otherwise vulnerable.

Fairness and the right of reply

People who are criticised in our reporting are given a genuine opportunity to respond before publication, and their response is reported fairly.

Conduct online

Staff social media activity reflects on the publication. Journalists should not express partisan political views or comment in ways that would call into question their ability to report fairly.

Reporting a breach

If you believe a member of our team has broken these standards, please tell us — email ghananews78@gmail.com or use our contact page. Every complaint is reviewed by an editor, as explained in our Feedback Policy.
