Voting is officially underway across Ghana as the New Patriotic Party (NPP) elects its flagbearer for the 2028 general elections. More than 211,000 delegates are expected to cast their votes at over 300 polling centres nationwide in what is being described as a crucial exercise in shaping the party’s future.

The contest features five prominent candidates: former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia; former Minister of Food and Agriculture Dr. Bryan Acheampong; former Minister of Education Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum; former NPP General Secretary Kwabena Agyei Agyepong; and former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong.

Delegates participating in the election include national, regional, and constituency party structures, as well as party elders and recognised external branches. Adjustments have been made to the register to account for deceased members and forfeitures, ensuring an updated delegate list for the exercise.

The Ashanti and Greater Accra regions represent the largest voting blocs, followed by the Eastern, Central, and Western regions. Political analysts suggest that voting trends in these key regions could prove decisive in determining the outcome.

Security has been heightened nationwide, with police deployed to guarantee a peaceful, orderly, and credible voting process. The NPP leadership has urged delegates to exercise responsibility, stressing the importance of party unity once results are announced.

Voting is expected to close later today, with counting to take place at the individual polling centres before results are transmitted to the party’s national collation centre in Accra.

The winning candidate will face the immediate challenge of uniting the party, addressing internal divisions, and presenting a compelling national vision as the NPP gears up for the 2028 elections. Observers note that this primary could significantly influence the party’s strategy and cohesion heading into the next general election cycle.
